Growing grapes in the Motueka Valley
With more than 2400 hours of sunshine annually, average summer temperatures of 21 degrees Celsius and an average rainfall of 970mm the region is ideal for aromatic varieties.
Redoubt Hill is planted on a steep north/west slope which benefits from the southerly winds.
Great care was taken to choose clones and root stock which would benefit from the rare Separation Point granite soil in which they are grown, at present we are the only vineyard in the country growing on this soil...
No irrigation has ever been used on the vineyard.
Close planting is used to intensify the flavours in the fruit, viticultural fine tuning influences the quality of fruit produced.
With this in mind; Redoubt Hill is firstly about quality and not quantity.
Our main wine varieties
All fruit is carefully hand picked and inspected before transportation to the winery.
Our main crops are premium white wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling. All our vines are grown from carefully selected rootstock to enable the production of premium quality wine. We maximise output by utilising the unique terroir of the area and the high sunshine hours.
All our vines are 7 years old and this year (2011) has been a great harvest. Last years vintage has nearly sold out and this year we are anticipating some great wines to be available for sale from October.
Redoubt Hill is part of the Sustainable Wine Project and is registered as a Sustainable Vineyard.
